Argentina is set to regain its emerging market classification after being downgraded to frontier status seven years ago by MSCI Inc. due to strict capital controls.
The benchmark for emerging markets is more than $9.5 trillion in assets worldwide, which would bring in a wave of new capital into the local stock market from investors currently wary about putting their money into a frontier market.
There is more than $2 trillion in emerging market equities compared to the $20 billion in frontier markets, a significant leap.
Argentina's capital controls were recently undone by newly elected President Mauricio Macri.
